Women’s right in times of Corona
May 25, 2020

This is the story of Rejany. She was born and raised in Cheruthoni, a district of Idukki that was
hit by severe floodings in both 2018 and 2019.
In the 2018 flooding Rejany lost 6 people of her neighborhood, in total 122 lives were lost in 2018, 92 more in 2019.
People are mentally down, relocated and shifted into government quarters on top of a hill,
waiting to be able to return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
Extreme precipitation events are on the rise in India, driven by warming temperatures and
changes in the monsoon. Persistent rain for weeks is frequent which is an ecological disaster.
Because of these heavy rains and too many man-made constructions which affect the water flow the
ground is not capable of dealing with it, also because the rain is getting heavier each year.
The resulting floods are being exacerbated by unplanned urban growth and environmental
degradation, driving millions from their homes and causing widespread damage.
As women are the most vulnerable in any disastrous situation compared to men, let’s help these
courageous women rebuild their future!
